Millom itself is considerably quieter than it was a century ago. After deposits of high quality iron ore (haematite) were discovered at nearby Hodbarrow in the mid-19th century, the town became a great centre for iron mining and steel making.

of Millom, Cumberland 1890 The company was registered on 23 September, to acquire the properties and businesses of the Cumberland Iron Mining and Smelting Co, and the Askam and Mouzell Iron Co.. 1901 The Askam Ironworks consisted of four furnaces — a more modern 90-feet furnace, and three older furnaces 75 feet high.

Millom's mining heritage is commemorated by a striking sculpture showing 'The Scutcher' (the miner who stopped the heavily laden iron ore tubs), which stands in front of the iconic Clock Tower on St George's Street.The sculpture, designed by Colin Telfer, is made from resin mixed with iron ore dust.

The Hodbarrow Mining Company was formed in 1853, when the then Earl of Lonsdale granted permission to Nathaniel Caine & John Barratt to search near Millom for iron ore (in the form of haematite). Its discovery started the boomtimes for the town, which grew up on the back of the Millom Ironworks, built in the 1860s.
